Carima Neusser

D1984, 2020
For her performance, Carima Neusser investigates the body and desire in relation to power. Extracting
inspiration from the novel 1984, Neusser creates a choreography from the forbidden love affair between the characters in the story. From this relationship and the suppression of sexuality by the
governing powers, love and romance surface to become a powerful form of activism. As Neusser
describes, the force of this kind of desire can’t be controlled.
In present times, the recommended social distancing and advice to stay home is affecting our
relationships, as well as our patterns of touch and bodily contact. Already, stories of resistance to these
protocols have emerged in communities, pointing to the fact that social interaction will always be an
ingrained human response. Possibly our future will be defined through the power of love and activism
just as it was in 1984.
At the Cable Factory, Carima Neusser will present a performance where she guides the audience
through movement, text, image and video, leading us to the subversive potential of our desires.
